Interior

The barndominium’s interior was inspired by log cabins. The interior walls are covered with wood panels that serve two functions. The first is to give the room a warm log cabin-like atmosphere. Coty utilized light-colored shiplap poplar wood panels; the wood panels have emphasized grains that increase their rustic appeal. The walls have an old rusted metal wainscot base contrasting the barndo’s interior color scheme. The second function of the wood panels is to hide the insulating materials. 

To barndo utilizes an open plan layout that makes it look roomier than it is. Another element that lends an illusion of space to the barndominium is its living room’s high ceiling. True to its log cabin motif, the living room walls are adorned with mounted taxidermy mounts. The log cabin motif extends to the living room floor, where a large bearskin rug dominates the center of the room. 

For the floors, the owner opted for a stained concrete finish. The stained concrete has amber, black, and gray colors that make the barndominium look warm. 

Kitchen

The barndo’s kitchen is situated right beside the living room. It measures 19 by 29 feet and is open above, making it look even bigger. This style also gives you a glimpse of the structure’s loft area. The said loft is empty but can function as a guest bedroom if needed. 

The first thing you’ll notice when you go to Coty’s kitchen is its cabinetry which utilizes rustic design. You can tell that the owner made sure that there are more than enough storage options in the kitchen because aside from the overhead cabinets, there are also cabinets under the granite countertop and beneath the kitchen island. 

The abundance of cabinets helps keep the kitchen organized. The lack of clutter also helps make the kitchen look neat and roomy. Although the rustic cabinetry is a nod to the structure’s log cabin-style interior, the kitchen is packed with modern amenities. It has a refrigerator, microwave oven, gas range with oven, and dishwasher to ensure the occupants can cook any meal they fancy. 

The coup de grace of the kitchen is its black walnut kitchen island. Instead of the usual geometric shape, the kitchen island has a live-edged design that gives it texture. The island’s countertop was polished with epoxy to make it more durable. It also makes it resistant to moisture, making it an ideal food preparation area. The kitchen island can also function as a breakfast nook or an informal snack bar for entertaining a small group of guests. 

Bedroom

The bedroom is located on the barndominium’s ground level. It has 11×15 square feet of sleeping quarters and an 11×9 walk-in closet. It is spacious enough for a queen-sized bed while leaving enough room for occupants to walk around comfortably. 

Bathroom

The barndominium only has one 5 by 12 feet bathroom, so no expense was spared. Aside from the toilet, it also has a bathtub where the owners can enjoy a relaxing soak. The bathroom walls have the same wood panels found throughout the barndo’s interior. 

Garage

The barndo has a spacious garage ideal for storing vehicles and hobby equipment. Although the garage also has the distinct shiplap panels found throughout the house, the ceiling is bare. The exposed beams give the garage an industrial look that distinguishes it from the homier look of the barndo’s living spaces.

Yes, it is worth building a barndominium for under 150k. Although it has smaller square footage than a barndominium under 200k, it should suffice for a small family. However, it involves a lot of work. Coty managed to build a barndo for just $110,000 because he was his own contractor. This helped him save on labor costs and stick to his budget.
