Barndo Building Process
This featured metal barndominium was built by self-performing contractor, Coty. It was initially visualized as a hobby shop or man cave, thus giving a charming cabin appeal. Even so, Coty’s family utilizes it as their living quarters while waiting for their main home to be built.
Primarily, the structure highlights many locally available materials in Coty’s area. Some of these materials were reused from an old barn. With the help of his brother and cabinet man, he also obtained good furniture touches.

Meanwhile, the planning serves all the essential living spaces, not limited to the ground level. He maximized the 40 by 60 sq. ft. area and came up with 24 by 40 ground floor space, a garage, and a loft. The barndo is enveloped by 14 ft. side walls and exhibits mirroring 10 by 60 sq. ft. side sheds.

Financing – How Did He Do It?
In the construction industry, it is essential to have a set budget. If you are like Coty, building DIY houses like barndominiums allows you to handle your own construction finances.
As per his experience, Coty contacted a local bank to assist him with financing. They offered him 4.79% up to 30 years. He was convinced and took a $30,000 loan on a 10-year plan. All in all, the total cost was $110,000, the appraisal went well, and his financing was a breeze thanks to the bank’s help.

Coty’s Barndominium Exterior – Simple Country-style Barn
The tranquil yet inviting barndo resembles a rural house with classic shaded porches. The facade exhibits wide black and white metal walls and a shed that could serve as the receiving area. It is minimalist upfront, concealing the stunning cabin interiors designed by the owner.
Interior – Dreamy Log Cabin
Once inside, your attention will be drawn by a lot of detail. The main living zone resembles a log house, including hunter adornments. Without the barriers, the family has full advantage of a wide and open plan.
Let us have a closer and more in-depth look at the barndo’s interior.

Living Area
The living area presents a high-ceiling space with an intricate layout. The wall finishes consist of admirable shiplap poplar with emphasized grains and an old rusted metal wainscot base. The ceiling matches the walls with tongue and groove boards. There are barn doors as well, complementing the overall log cabin style of the barndo. Another great element is the stained concrete floor finish with amber, gray, and black colors, personally picked by the owner.

Kitchen
Across the living room is the kitchen that comes with rustic cabinetry and decor. The 19 by 29 sq. ft. plan is open above, giving us a glimpse of the loft. Granite countertops are preferred for this area, with the impressive live-edged black walnut island countertop. Special thanks to Coty’s brother, who polished it with epoxy– it goes well with the concept. It is a wide counter; it could serve as a nook/bar to serve food.

Bedroom
You can access the main bedroom from the ground level. It has ample space for a full-sized bed. Along with the 11 by 15 sq. ft. sleeping quarters, it has its own 11 by 9 walk-in closet. This is the only enclosed room in this barn home, yet it is capacious enough for a bedroom.

Bathroom
The 5 by 12 bathroom is equipped with matching wooden finishes. It has a partially enclosed shower space and a water closet. It functions as the main toilet and bath for the entire residence.

Loft
Going up, you’ll first notice the stairs with distinct finishes. The stair treads are the pair textures of the kitchen’s island countertop, and the risers are old metal ridge caps from the same source as the metal wainscoting. The rails are black walnut with a Polly coat and half-inch unpolished rebar.

A step on the loft’s landing, and you can get a nice view of the ground floor. It is not enclosed but could be turned into a guest bedroom. A bed could fit in this area, and as proposed, it could also be a playroom.
Utility & Pantry
The utility and pantry are placed under the loft’s stairs, enclosed with natural wood barn doors which are aesthetically pleasing.
Garage
A large floor area that could store hobby equipment and large vehicles. It is industrial style, perfect for a garage and shop.

Wrap Up
