Incredible Sliding, Unfolding And Rotating Houses (15 HQ Pictures)

We’ve seen modular furniture that can change within minutes but seeing an entire house change the way it looks is definitely something else. These houses can radically change their appearance by sliding, unfolding and rotating and the transformation is absolutely spectacular each and every time.

Sharifi-Ha house

1

You’ve gotta love the Iranian design group Nextoffice project which scales up the the space-saving technique. Their work on the three-floor Sharifi-Ha house in Tehran incorporates a series of semi-mobile rooms, which can be oriented to allow for extra space and sunlight. The rooms can be rotated by simply pressing a button and lifting a stair to secure the room in place (check out the ‘instructions’ below for more insight on the mechanics). Nextoffice shares more on the architectural potential of the Sharifi-Ha House:

The project consisted of four major parts: the fixed volume of the structure, the void, fixed volume and the mobile volume, respectively. When the turning boxes are closed, the building captures sunlight throughout the space of the central void, which also connects the two fixed volumes by suspended bridges.

The house adapts to the functional needs of its users. For instance, depending on whether there is a guest or not, the guest room (located on the second floor) can be reconfigured for different purposes. Similarly, home offices and breakfast rooms (turning rooms on the first and third floors) can change the formality of their appearance according to their residents; desires. In other words, there is always the possibility of having different seasonal or lighting scenarios.

The D*Haus

The D*Haus was designed by the British company with the same name to adapt to harsh and changing climatic conditions. The house allows 8 different configurations and it responds to its environment thanks to its flexible structure. It’s comprised of 4 polygonal shapes that can be moved individually. It’s a house that can easily adapt to the changing seasons and climatic conditions by basically moving inside itself. The internal walls become facades and vice versa while the interior remains the same.

The UFO-like Domespace rotating wooden house

8

Domespace is a rotating wooden house. The design brings numerous benefits. For example, the shape makes it resistant to cyclonic winds and it was built over an elastomeric belt which cushions vibrations and this also allows the house to withstand earthquakes of up to 8 on the Richter scale. This UFO-like house also makes the most of passive solar energy and it can rotate to follow the sun.

Sliding House

The Sliding House designed by dRMM Architects has mobile walls and roof that can simply slide back to reveal a glass and steel structure completely opened to the exterior. The dynamic change takes place right in front of your eyes. The 20 ton timber enclosure is like a shell powered by electric motors on wheels. This extraordinary house is located in Suffolk, England.

ReActor

Called ReActor, the house is capable of rotating and tilting on its supporting plinth. It’s been designed by architect/artist duo Alex Schweder and Ward Shelley.

According to the designers, the house’s movements are a response to the inhabitants’ own movements, external forces and the internal conditions.
